When a home is sold in Massachusetts the seller is required to obtain a Certificate of Compliance from the
Fire Dept. this certificate certifies that the dwelling has been inspected by the Fire Department. The proper number of smoke
detectors have been installed and are all in the proper location. Most of all, all detectors are in excellent
working condition.
Detectors shall be in the following locations:
Basement: 1 smoke detector located at the foot of the basement stairs.
1st floor: 1 smoke detector located at the foot of the stairs leading to the 2nd floor.
2nd floor: 1 smoke at the top of the stairs in the hall. If the hall is greater then 30 feet a 2nd smoke
detector shall be installed.
Any one floor that has a floor area greater then 1200sqft shall have at least 2 smoke detectors on that
level. Additional smoke detectors may be added due to the floor layout.
Any bedrooms in the basement or on the 1st floor shall have a smoke detector installed outside the bedroom
door.
All smoke detectors shall be installed on the ceiling. No smoke detectors will be permitted to be installed
in a corner or on the ceiling up against the wall.
There is a $50.00 fee due upon the completion of the inspection.
All checks shall be made out to "Town of Topsfield" NOT the Fire Department
